Steel Industry Tariffs and the Future of the Industry

Impact of Recent Steel Industry Tariffs

Summit Steel & Manufacturing was recently featured on an ABC News report about steel prices and the American steel industry, especially in light of recent tariffs that have been implemented as an element of the president’s trade policies.

Summit Steel’s own Frank Payne was happy to tell ABC about how hopeful we are about the future of American steel. Payne feels the steel tariffs on imported products have leveled the playing field for companies that do all their work in the U.S., like Summit Steel. While some are pessimistic and point out that the rise in imported steel prices is leading to a corresponding increase in domestic prices, with those costs shouldered by American manufacturers, others feel something needed to change to make the U.S. more competitive.

Our president, Gary Romig, was quick to point out that business has been on an upturn and Summit is not feeling a negative impact from the new trade environment, even with having to pay a bit more for raw materials. Romig cited an increase in inquiries from foreign companies looking to use U.S. steel to make the products they are looking to sell in the United States.

Payne, for his part, has been in the steel industry long enough to remember being laid off in the 1980s. He is heavily encouraged by the opportunity he feels the new trade approach has given him and his co-workers to keep earning a living.
